    Plugs and sockets for household and similar purposes | South Africa LOA certification
    Date:2023/6/2  Clicks:718
    South African LOA certification background
    The South African International Bureau of Standards (SABS) is a subsidiary body of the South African Ministry of Industry and Trade, responsible for system certification and product certification in South Africa, as well as representing the country in managing mandatory regulatory standards. SABS grants the right to use marks and issues certificates of conformity for products that meet the standards.

    In July 2008, the South African national government announced the Compulsory Norms Implementation Act (referred to as Act 5 of 2008), which was enforced in September 2008. As a result, NRCS became an independent institution, taking over the national regulations of SABS, representing the South African Ministry of Industry and Trade to oversee the implementation of national mandatory regulations. Under the control of NRCS, all electrical products and accessories that are included in mandatory regulations, whether exported or sold in the South African market, must apply to NRCS for a Letter of Authority as a customs clearance and sales pass.

    Applicable product range
    Electronic and electrical products listed in mandatory regulations fall into the following five categories:
    1) Household and similar use products;
    2) Information technology products;
    3) Electronic entertainment equipment;
    4) Handheld electric tools;

    5) Wire and cable.

    Testing standards
    The South African plug LOA project allows South Africa to accept CNAS reports and apply for relevant LOA certification. The relevant South African plug and socket testing standards are as follows:

    SANS 164-0: Plug and socket systems for household and similar purposes in South Africa - Part 0: General and safety requirements

    SANS 164-1: Plug and socket systems for household and similar purposes in South Africa - Part 1: Two pole grounding, 16A250Va. c. system

    SANS 164-2: Plug and socket systems for household and similar purposes in South Africa - Part 2: Two pole grounded and two pole ungrounded (Class II), 16 A250Va. c. system

    SANS 164-2-1: Plug and socket systems for household and similar purposes in South Africa - Part 2-1: Two pole with grounding, 16A250Va. c. Partial dedicated system

    SANS 164-2-2: Plug and socket systems for household and similar purposes in South Africa - Part 2-2: Two pole with grounding, 16A250Va. c. fully dedicated system

    SANS 164-3: Plug and socket systems for household and similar purposes in South Africa - Part 3: Two pole with grounding, 6A250Va. c. system

    SANS 164-4: Plug and socket systems for household and similar purposes in South Africa - Part 4: Two pole with grounding, 16A250Va. c. dedicated system

    SANS 164-5: Plug and socket systems for household and similar purposes in South Africa - Part 5: Two pole ungrounded, 2.5A250Va.c. system

    SANS 164-6: Plug and socket systems for household and similar purposes in South Africa - Part 6: Two pole ungrounded (Class II), 16A250Va.c. system

    SANS 60884-1/IEC 60884-1: Plugs and Sockets for Household and Similar Purposes - Part 1: General Requirements

    VC 8008: Safety regulations for plugs, sockets, and power adapters

    Test items
    The main safety standards for plugs and sockets are: SANS 60884-1/IEC 60884-1: Plugs and Sockets for Household and Similar Purposes - Part 1: General Requirements.

    The test items are shown in Table 1:
